| 3G2 | The 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) is a collaboration between telecommunications associations to make a globally applicable third generation 3G mobile phone system specification within the scope of the ITU's IMT-2000 project. In practice, 3GPP2 is the standardization group for CDMA2000, the set of 3G standards based on earlier 2G CDMA technology. |
| 3GP, 3GPP | The mpeg4 based video format used in mobile terminals, like cell phones. This file format is designed for 3rd generation mobile devices.Related software: 3GP Video Converter, Video Converter, Video Converter for Mobile Phone |
| AVI | Stands for Audio Video Interleaved, storing sound and moving pictures in RIFF format developed by Microsoft. An AVI file can use different codec and formats so there is no set format for an AVI file unlike for example standard VCD video which sets a standard for resolution, bitrates, and codec used. Most commonly used video codecs that use AVI structure are M-JPEG and DivX. Related software: AVI MPEG Converter , Video Converter |
| M4V | a standard file format for the popular Apple iPod devices and PlayStation Portable (PSP). There are two definitions for the term M4V. The first is that raw MPEG-4 Visual bit streams (".mp4") are named .m4v. The second is that download videos from the iTunes store are in m4v format, along with videos that are converted in iTunes. |
| MKV | The MKV format (Matroska Video) is an entirely free video format. More precisely, it is a container (hence the name Matroska, in reference to the Russian dolls contained within another) making it possible to contain video (DivX, Xvid, RV9, etc), sound (MP3, MP2, AC3, Ogg, AAC, DTS, PCM), as well as subtitles (SRT, ASS, SSA, USF, etc) in the same file. |
| MOV | MOV is a file extension used by the QuickTime-wrapped files. |
| MP4 | MP4 is the global file extension for the official container format defined in the MPEG-4 standard. MP4 is streamable and supports all kinds of multimedia content, multiple audio-, video-, subtitle streams, pictures, variable-frame rates, -bitrates, -samplerates...) and advanced content like 2D and 3D animated graphics, user interactivity, DVD-like menus. The MP4 file format is widely support by many portable devices such as iPod, iPhone, Zune, PSP etc. |
| MPEG | MPEG stands for Moving Picture Expert Group in charge of the development of standards for coded representation of digital audio and video. There are several audio/video formats which bear this group's name, such as MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG-4. |
| MPG | one of a number of file extensions for MPEG-1 computer files. |
| WMV | WMV stands for Windows Media Video. WMV, developed by Microsoft, is a generic name of Microsoft's video encoding solutions and doesn't necessarily define the technology what it uses. In WMV7, Microsoft has used its own flavour of MPEG4 video encoding technology. You can use a .wmv file either to download and play files or to stream content. Windows Media Video is used for both streaming and downloading content via the Internet. Microsoft's Windows Media Player, an application bundled with Windows XP operating systems, lets you playback and manage a range of audio and video file types, including, of course, WMA and WMV. |
| RM | stands for Real Media. Real Media is one of the most popular formats for streaming content on the Internet, RealMedia includes the RealAudio codec for sound clips and RealVideo codec for movies. RealAudio and RealVideo files are often given the common RealMedia ".RM" file extension. RealMedia files are often heavily compressed so they can stream over dial-up Internet connections. |
| XviD | is an ISO MPEG-4 compliant video codec. It's not a product but an open source project which is developed and maintained by people around the world. |
| RMVB | RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia container format developed by RealNetworks. RMVB files are extremely popular for distributing Asian content, especially anime and Chinese television episodes. For this reason, they have become noticeably present (though not entirely popular) on file sharing platforms such as BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella. |
| RealVideo | a proprietary video format developed by RealNetworks. RealVideo is usually paired with RealAudio and packaged in a RealMedia (.rm) container. RealMedia is suitable for use as a streaming media format, that is one which is viewed while it is being sent over the network. Streaming video can be used to watch live television, since it does not require downloading the video in advance. |
| Podcast | A podcast (not to be confused or equated with Apple Inc's iPod) usually consists of a combination of audio and/or video that is made available for download via syndication. The files are usually retrieved with software applications (generically known as podcatchers) such as Apple's iTunes so that subscribers can listen at their convenience on devices that have intermittent, slow, or are otherwise lacking Internet access.. Like the term broadcast, podcast can refer either to the content itself or to the method by which the content is syndicated; the latter is also called podcasting. A podcaster is the person who creates the content. |
| Video podcast | Video podcast (sometimes shortened to vodcast or less commonly vidcast) is a term used for the online delivery of video on demand video clip content via Atom or RSS enclosures. The term is an evolution specialized for video, coming from the generally audio-based podcast and referring to the distribution of video where the RSS feed is used as a non-linear TV channel to which consumers can subscribe using a PC, TV, set-top box, media center or mobile multimedia device. Web television series are often distributed as video podcasts. |
| DPG | DPG is the Video format for Nintendo DSL game player, which created by Mr Moonlight, composed of mpeg1video and mpeg2 audio. |
